Proofreading is the final pass after editing is finished — a fresh, methodical read whose only job is to catch what everybody else stopped seeing. Spelling, punctuation, tense slips, doubled words, inconsistent character names, chapter numbers that jump from eleven to thirteen.
Formatting is the other half of that final mile. A book that is set properly disappears: the reader never notices the margins, the running heads or the chapter openers, because nothing pulls them out of the story. That is exactly the point.

What is the difference between editing and proofreading?
Editing improves the writing — structure, pacing, clarity, word choice. Proofreading is the final error check after editing is done and the book has been laid out. You want editing first; proofreading last.
How long does proofreading take?
A typical 60,000 to 80,000 word manuscript takes 5 to 8 business days. Longer or heavily technical books take proportionally more, and we will give you a firm date before starting.
Do you format children's books and cookbooks?
Yes. Fixed-layout titles with illustrations, recipes or photography are handled separately from standard text formatting, because they need image placement, colour profiles and their own eBook build.
What style guide do you follow?
Chicago Manual of Style by default for US fiction and non-fiction, or your preferred guide if you have one. We build a style sheet for your book and apply it consistently.
Can you proofread a book you did not edit?
Absolutely. Most proofreading clients come to us with a manuscript that has already been edited elsewhere. We will do a free sample pass so you can see the level of detail before committing.
